"Four of us: Rose, Ella, Marta and Carla. In another life we might all have been friends together. But this was Birchwood."

Ella was snatched on her way from school and taken to Birchwood, better known as Auschwitz. We follow Ella on a journey through her new life at Birchwood, her first few weeks in the tailoring studio, her friendship and her enemies. This is a truly eye opening read about a subject that is historically remembered and will never be forgotten. With images of sewing equipment ad red ribbons sprawled across the pages its hard to forget Ella's dream of one day opening her own dress shop.
To say I enjoyed this book just doesn't seem quite right given the context of the book. But I really did, I couldn't put it down. A story about friendship, survival and hope. A young adult novel that is gripping and heartbreaking.
