Firstly, this book is one of the most beautifully produced that I have ever come across. The wrap around dust jacket and beautiful end papers are so special, and then there are the little illustrations of scissors, ribbon, pins and thimbles scattered throughout the pages.
We join Ella at Auschwitz where at the very start she has to fight to find her place there and not join 'the lists'. She uses her dressmaking skills, learnt from her grandmother and joins the seamstresses making clothes for the guards and commanders' families. Throughout the story she encounters many trials and things get tougher as time goes on, but her and Rose (her best friend) are such wonderful characters, we are always championing them to survive and make it out of there alive.
Beautifully written from the point of view of fifteen year old Ella, this one will stay with me for a long time.
