Found this little beauty in a Pound shop - I like YA and fantasy, fairytale retelling and similar, so from the cover and the blurb I thought it was definitely worth a shot for £1. Contrary to the cover art it is not a fairytale, not by a long shot….
It’s written in 1st person narrative, which I don’t always enjoy as I like to know what’s going on with the other characters and 1st person doesn’t always give that, but that’s just my preference.
It establishes characters and tone very early, so you’re straight into the atmosphere of the character’s lives.
One feature I’m not keen on in my copy Hot Key books, 2017 hardback edition) is that it has watermarks throughout the book, some of the red ribbon but there are also some grey images of scissors which can make the text a little difficult to read if the lighting isn’t good. Again, this is more of a personal preference, some people may quite like this unique feature
