"The Red Ribbon" is a story of a girl trying to survive a concentration camp during the Second World War, of the friends and enemies she makes as a prisoner, and the dreams she tries to hold on to when all around her is hell.

I was reluctant to read this book-- I feel that the genre of "WW2" books can feel kind of samey, and most of them are not an uplifting reads. I was wrong about this one, though. Lucy Adlington handles the story of Rose with a deft hand, weaving her story with flashes of hope and kindness, despite the most darkest of contexts.

I thought the real life detail of the camp having a "sewing room" where the prisoners had to make couture fashions for the guards was fascinating, and obviously led to moving contrasts between the clothes and the girls making them.

But my favorite part about the book were the friendships that Rose made: they were diverse, rich, and not always what they seemed. A great read!
