The cover for this book is lovely, you get the grey base colour which for me represents the coldness and horror that was endured on the POW camps, with the striking significance of the red ribbon and needle flashed across the middle of the book.

I have read many books of this kind, and I always have high expectations and this one certainly didn’t disappoint.

The characters in it are actually quite enjoyable to read about, some of them are quiet, some funny and some grumpy and it’s just how I would imagine any sewing environment full of women. The only difference for Rose, Ella and the other women is that they are in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

One of the key factors in this is the red ribbon, and how it is a ribbon that symbolises hope. It really captivates the troubles that I imagine a 14-year old at that time would be going through and although painful and uncomfortable to read at times with the brutal honesty - it is so brilliantly portrayed.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has read and highly rated The Diary of Anne Frank, The Boy In the striped pyjamas, The Tattooist of Auschwitz etc
