Sad and poignant
Was drawn to this book by the title and the jacket graphics. The hard back copy that I read had a good weight and the paper was of a high grade. The story synopsis drew me in, but didn’t keep me as I put the book down after about 70 pages.
In my ignorance I hadn’t realised that Birchwood, where the story is set, was actually Birkenau-Auschwitz one of the death camps during the Second World War. Once this realisation started to set in I couldn’t continue to read for fear of the horrors that may have been described.
The synopsis said “Every dress she makes could mean the difference between life and death” , I thought this was a reference to the person in the dress not the person making the dress. I was expecting a Brothers Grimm type story which it was not. The author did bring the characters to life and I would have liked to find out what happened but was too sensitive and fearful that Ella and her friends would have an unfortunate end.
