This book is perfect for anyone who has read Once by Morris Gleitzman. It came out at the same time as Boy in Striped Pjamas but is much better .

This is based on true stories also and is the story of fourteen year old Ella who begins her first day at work in this truly terrible place . She makes friends with Rose and together they face the harshness of life here .
The writing is just beautiful , even when describing the most harrowing details .Although I knew many things about this horrendous place I did not know that some of the women and girls were forced to make dresses for the officers wives . Just imagine how it must have seemed for them to go from the colourless , brutal world to working with all the rich, soft and colourful materials and back again each day .
I love the innocence , but strength of the main characters and will not forget this book
