The Rules of Seeing is a fascinating subject. Joe Heap writes about Nova, a young woman who has been blind since birth. She is immensely talented, is proficient in five languages, attended Oxford university and has a good job. Her brother, Alex, is a doctor and has come across research into an operation Nova could have which has an excellent chance of giving her sight. This is cleverly illustrated with a light bulb on the cover of the book. Most sighted people would assume anyone would jump at the chance but Nova is unsure. How would she cope seeing a world she doesn't recognise. The author also introduces the reader to Kate who is in a controlling relationship and who has a secret she is keeping from her partner, Tony, and, it would appear, he also has a secret. This is a book that will grab readers' interest. I can't wait to read the rest and find out if Nova has he operation, what secrets Kate and Tony are keeping from one another and how the two story lines come together.
