I like both of the narrating characters. They have very different situations and relationships with those around them and I think they will both have interesting stories to unfold. The novel appears to deal with sensitive issues in a light and approachable way, through likeable characters. It seems that the narrative will explore Nova’s relationship with seeing for the first time and how she deals with this. As described by Nova, this is an alien and scary concept to her as she has been blind her entire life and doesn’t need ‘fixing’ - the decision to go ahead with the operation is clearly a struggle as she also recognises that she often relies on acts of kindness.

The Rules of Seeing seems to be a heart-warming romance which shows kindness and light in humanity and within relationships, but also the darkness which can creep in to seemingly good characters. Kate’s story seems to be in contrast to Nova's. Her narrative begins with an argument with her boyfriend Tony and an injury which left her unconscious. They have frequent arguments and he seems to be hiding something. Judging by the synopsis, there may be a darker side to their relationship which will evolve through the narrative and affect Kate deeply. There are lots of directions these two narratives could take, and I look forward to seeing how they weave together. I expect this will be a good read with engaging characters.

The cover is simple, bright and eye catching - it seems light-hearted like a romance book. The lightbulb relates to the title and story, and adds a bit of interest to the cover. The orange colour especially jumped out at me as I scrolled through, and it would at least give me pause if I was searching online or in a book shop.
