In the modern world, we're closer and closer to be able to bring eyesight to the blind and this brings up the morality of 'will the blind, that have never know other reality, be willing to change their sight?'. For Nova this is a hard decision to make. Whether one could only see literally the bright side of a perfect site, Joan twists it into a darker tale. She makes us realise how overwhelming our daily lives can be, if only we were aware of how much we're forced to take in. I personally enjoy how she so perfectly portraits all the challenges of seeing for the first time, how that one characteristic can define our movements and our actions; the impact of a mere facial expression. Small things we developed unconsciously while Nova falls into exhaustion to learn. For me, this is what dragged me into the book. The ending, how the actions led to it, I think, get a little mixed up and don't find the whole plot particularly interesting.
