This is a really unique story and one that definitely made me reflect on how I see the world around me. It focuses on two main characters, Kate and Nova and the impact they have on each other when their paths collide. Nova has been blind from birth but when her brother Alex persuades her to have an operation that will restore her sight a new and daunting world is waiting. When Kate meets Nova she too is struggling to overcome her own layers of darkness.

I thought it was clever how this story was split in to three sections (shapes, bodies and objects) just like the three different sets of flash cards Nova is given by her doctor to help her begin to navigate her new surroundings after her life changing operation. Each section signifies an important decision/step in Nova and Kate’s lives. I also really liked how the pictures above each of the chapter numbers were significant for both Kate and Nova as the chapter progressed; this was a really cool link and allowed me to think ahead as to what its relevance might be.

I have really enjoyed how Nova and Kate and have been able to gain so much from each other when they are learning to “see” as part of their individual journeys (in a literal and metaphorical sense respectively). The use of Nova’s ‘Rules of Seeing’ which were interspersed throughout made me take that moment to pause and reflect to realise just how much I, as a sighted person, take for granted at times. The relationship that develops between them over the months this story spans is a truly special one and I have loved how their story has made me see things in a new way.
