At the start I liked the concept of this book, and how there were short snippets of Kate's life during each chapter, giving us an idea of her life and how her and Nova's paths would cross. However, I was disappointed a few chapters in when in the blank page between the chapters Nova had suddenly had her operation. As you read on the focus becomes more and more on Kate, and then on the love story between Kate and Nova. I don't think the romantic storyline really added much, in fact I feel it detracted from the one implied by the book's title - Nova's journey as she learned to use her eyes for the first time, having spent the first thirty or so years of her life blind.
There really are two storylines in this book, which could have made good books in their own right and I feel that joining them and turning them into a love story really waters down what could have been two powerful stories - one about a journey from blindness into the sighted world, the other about someone trapped in an abusive relationship where even the police can't help...
The cover of the book is simple, but striking (even if it does remind you of a 'Tips' icon from a certain brand of tablet/phone!). I also liked how the book was spilt into three sections, each one named after the different packs of cards Nova uses to learn shapes, objects and bodies. The picture above each chapter heading was a nice touch too, as they were all relevant to their specific chapter.
