What a beautifully written book!
It arrived yesterday and I couldn't put it down.
This is so much more than a poignant love story about Kate, an architect whose marriage is failing, and Nova, who has been blind since birth and has an operation to let her see.
The visual metaphors and naïve, innocent descriptions as Nova sees things for the first time are breathtakingly accurate. Nova's problems with adapting to a visual world after 31 years in the dark are wittily brought home to the reader in the 'rules' which she makes to help her cope. There are some stunning observations which I feel could become philosophical quotations in future eg 'the thing about learning to see is that everywhere becomes a place you've never visited before. Even home.'
The book also has a good psychological, drama plot.
I don't often remember the details of many of the books I read for more than a few weeks but I know that I am going to remember The Rules of Seeing for a long time. I might even read it again!
