The Rules of Seeing is the story of two different women whose lives collide one fateful day at a hospital. Nova has been blind since birth, but due to a miraculous operation she is now able to see. The author described Nova’s experiences of learning to see, brilliantly. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to describe to someone the difficulties of seeing after you’ve been blind for decades, but the author explained it with such clarity I understood the struggles Nova was facing.
Kate is a much more complicated character, after hitting her head quite violently at home she suffered a bleed on the brain. Since that occurrence she has been experiencing flashbacks and painful headaches, she’s trying to see what she has missed out on, what led her to hurt her head.
At times the story was rather slow but it was always interesting. I found Nova to be the more fascinating character with her upbeat wit and enthusiasm for life whereas Kate was someone I pitied and sought help for.
Definitely an interesting and different read.
