Right from the start I felt deeply sorry for Kate. Abusive husband, cut off from any friendships she used to have, a typical 'battered wife'. I was angry that she hadn't left Tony, despite her ordeals, but could see she was a very fragile individual.

The other main character, Nova, I felt pity towards at first, then frustration- offered the chance to cure her blindness but not seeing it as a good thing, I wanted to grab her and shake her and scream for God's sake take it, or don't moan about your situation.

As I learned more about each of the women's complicated lives, I really warmed to them both and enjoyed following their story. I feel like I learned a lot about domestic violence, mental health issues and the struggles associated with blindness and enjoyed being enlightened.

The story surrounding these characters was an emotional one, but one I couldn't step away from. I read the book in a day and was really disappointed when it ended. One of my favourite reads of the year so far.
