Nova has been blind from birth. She is accepting of this and lives her life to the full. But when her brother encourages her to have radical surgery to restore her sight she reluctantly goes ahead with the procedure.

Kate lives in an abusive relationship with her husband. We can see how dis-functional this relationship is from the start but she refuses to accept that she doesn't have the perfect marriage and life. When the physical abuse becomes extreme and she is admitted to hospital with head injuries, the two characters meet and their story begins.

I found the description and writing around the eye procedure actually fascinating. It would seem to me as a person who has had the gift of sight all my life unbelievable that someone would not leap at the chance of having their sight restored. The author made us understand how dramatically this was changing Nova's life - which she was perfectly happy with as a blind person. The detail he went into to describe the challenges of regained sight was - excuse the pun - eye-opening.

The romance was nice to start with but somehow not as believable as I would have hoped for. This was the part of the book that didn't quite gel for me.
