Nova’s been blind since birth. She is an optimist and handles everything brilliantly, with humour and humility. When her brother convinces her to have an operation to restore her sight, Nova is at first reluctant, realising that her life, as she knows it, will change and be something she no longer understands. The world can be a scary place.

Then she meets Kate, who has many secrets and hides all of her own darkness. Together they must counteract their demons and start all over again.

Well I loved this book. It’s such an easy read from the start, and so likeable. I immediately warmed to Nova who is a one off character. Kate is more complex and the reader is slowly introduced to her throughout the book. Her policeman husband, Tony, is always lurking menacingly in the background and he brings a real threat to the friendship.

It’s an original book. I’ve never read anything like it before and within a couple of days I’d read 150 pages because it’s so easy to pick up and continue reading. I think I probably read the whole book in about four sittings, such is the writing which is so engaging that you just don’t want to put it down. I found I was looking forward to setting some time aside to read it. I’m happy to say that, after a couple of ‘meh’ books lately this is one I really did enjoy. The author writes with such expertise about the two women which I can only salute him for … and of course the problems that a non sighted person has when she starts to see things for the first time. Brilliantly described and heartwarming, we share in Nova’s delight and discovering things for the first time at the age of 32!

The book is about belief, love and finding happiness when you least expect it. What’s not to like? Thoroughly recommended! Five stars.
