Having read the blurb for the book I was not surprised to be launched straight into the action and race-for-life prologue to the book, but then this first chapter reads like a remake of 'Cruel Intentions' with the 'bitchy school girls going to the expensive school in Manhattan' trope being used to its full effect. You can't help but dislike the over-bearing, perfectionist mother and the environment of the new school which Skye, the main character, has been brought into. I was not entirely sold by the first chapter as I felt more irritation towards the people Skye was introducing us to than interest or compassion for Skye. It then felt like the apocalyptic element of the book was shoe-horned in at the end of the excerpt. However, I would be interested to find out how the story changes and how this somewhat sci-fi theme is brought into the book.
