As I started reading ‘The Secret Runners of New York’ I felt I may have picked up a young adult book which wasn’t going to go anywhere. Girl fancies boy, girl goes to party, hilarity ensues. This was not the case.

What’s started as a story of teenage angst turns into a story of brutality, survival and apocalypse. My main criticism is that it takes a while to get to that point and that the ending is somewhat abrupt.

I enjoyed the style of writing - it is easy to follow and it’s short chapters means that the story moves along with a good pace. The description of apocalyptic New York was particularly vivid and any inhabitants of Manhattan will recognise where the author is describing.

I would recommend this book to those who would like to read a story with teenagers at its heart, but with a twist.
