At first this story didn't appeal much as it's set in a New York high school for (seriously) wealthy kids. The usual rivalries and bitchy hierarchies which seem to abound in such stories were magnified in this stratum of society.

But then a science fiction element appeared and the story really got interesting. And then gripping. And then horrific. Before eventually evening out to an unexpected but satisfying denouement.

Many of the characters had more depth to them than had at first appeared and we have an intelligent and loving first-person protagonist, Skye Allen. There is space in the plot for subsequent episodes for Skye and her twin brother Red so I hope the author takes advantage of that.

I haven't read any of Matthew Reilly's previous novels so I have many treats in store.
