This book hooks you in with tense drama from the outset. The story then builds slowly for while as we get to know the characters and plot lines are laid, before picking up the pace again as we hurtle towards the end of the world - March 17 2018, the day a gamma cloud is due to hit earth and wipe out most of civilisation.
Most of the book is told through the eyes of Skye, who has recently moved to New York with her twin brother Red. We follow her as she tries to fit in at a new (very exclusive) private school - The Monmouth School. As Red and Skye integrate with the New York elite they are invited to join a gang known as the Secret Runners of New York. The gang has access to a portal that transports them into the future - after the gamma cloud has hit.....
I think that there is potential for a second book - with the different coloured portal gems being involved (there appear to be red, green and yellow gems - only yellow ones are used in this book). Indeed, there seems to be a teaser at the end of the book along these lines.
The book has been described as a Young Adult novel, but I don't think it should be limited to just that genre. Whilst I've never been put off by a book being in the YA section, others might be - and they'd be missing out!
