The Secret Runners Of New York is the most fun science fiction, time-travel, end-of-the-world book out there! Definitely, without a doubt. Creative and clever. Matthew Reilly offers an inspired yet original imagining of a future that can feel so close at hand with the climate change crises.

It's fair to say this brings with it fast-thinking, unpredictable twists. A thriller as much as anything else. It really is 'out there.'

I'm a fan of this story which takes us into the life of Skye Rogers. It's her first day at The Monmouth School, a school infamous for its missing students. All four or so, girls went missing their first year there. What is Skye in for? Will she survive high school?

I was wary of Reilly perpetuating old 'high-school' tropes and cliches, from the characters, their lives, their lives, their one-sideness... But I think, at the same time, it can be appreciated: it serves as the familiar in a strange, scary world of unfamiliar. This book was written with both ingenious thought and, compelling design.
