As someone who doesn't really read fantasy, and not the target market for this YA book I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Set in Ireland, Rose is being bullied at school and takes solace by visiting an elderly couple Gracie and Nellie who brighten her days and offer her home-baked goods and sweets.

However, things take a turn for the worse and into weirdness when one evening Rose is given a magical stone to protect by an ice giant. It is up to her to save the world from legendry creatures, with her wits, a stone a hammer, the bully Emer, and the elderly couple to help her.

It was a really sweet story, with an environmental twist which was fast moving and a bit of a page turner. I particularly loved the catshee not-cat and how it transformed into a magical creature just when it was needed.

This was a perfect read for a cold, autumn afternoon. Many thanks to Readers First for an advanced review copy.
