I thought this was a great book, which is aimed at MG readers. It tells the story of Rose and how she is given the responsibility of stopping the war between the figures of Irish folklore. I loved the way the author explores the Irish figures and history, and the battle at the end has so much to it, it makes for an exciting conclusion.

Rose is a good protagonist, as someone who feels she doesn’t fit in with her new school, she is an outsider, but through this she forms relationships which will help her in her quest, as well as remembering the words and stories of her recently deceased grandmother. The idea of tradition and stories being passed down is an important one in this novel, and shows the author’s love of her country and its past.

Whilst showing the battle between the different warriors; the author also highlights the effects of destroying nature, as a building development has started to lead to the destruction of the Silver Road, which keeps the magic of old alive. It’s important in books aimed at younger readers to explore this issue, and it’s done well in this, without sounding preachy.

The illustrations in the book are beautiful, and adds to the magic of the novel. Highly recommended for younger readers of fantasy and mythology.
