This is a great adventure story combining elements from Irish mythology with the wonderful imagination of the author, Sinead O'Hart. In The Silver Road Rosaleen Darke, known as Rose, is having a difficult time at her new school and is the target of the school bullies led by Emer McGuire. Rose has made friends with two elderly people, Gracie and Nellie who have shops on Hargate Street, and Rose is in the habit of calling into see them on her way home from school. There is a strange occurrence one night when Rose is wakened by what seems to be a hail storm. She goes out into the garden and the hail gathers itself together to form an ice giant called Sioc who entrusts a red stone to Rose's care. Sioc was being pursued by Cethlenn, a malevolent witch determined to avenge the death of her husband and bring him back to life which would mean terrible events coming to the world. Rose speaks to Gracie and Nellie and discovers they are aware of the weakening in the Silver Road of the defences against Cethlenn. Rose goes on an amazing adventure to defeat Cethlenn with the help of various characters she meets along the way. Great read for all youngsters, particularly those interested in mythology.
