On the whole, a good read

After a fairly slow start, this book developed into quite a readable story. I struggled with the accounts of Rose being bullied - but, then I never enjoy accounts of bullying in any form - but, once the story moved on from this, I developed some affection for some of the characters. I was annoyed by certain events in the book - particularly one trope that is overused and unbelievable (am being vague so I don't give any spoilers). The battle scenes were ok - but a bit long-winded. I think the main problem is that I am not the target audience for this book and I am sure that a younger reader will enjoy it more. Also, the book contains a large amount of Irish folklore which I know very little about - so I couldn't immerse myself in the story as much as I would like to. Still, all-in-all, not a bad read. I would recommend it to a younger audience but it will probably be enjoyed by people of all ages.
