A haunting tale of despair and devotion
The Silver Road is an atmospheric and emotive novel set in northern Sweden. The story centres around Lelle, a devoted father committed to finding his missing teenage daughter, Lina, and Meja, a lonely teenager looking to escape a dysfunctional relationship with her mentally-ill mother, Silje. Originally written in Swedish, the translation felt relatively smooth and natural with a descriptive narrative, believable dialogue and an interesting array of characters. The book felt a bit slow to start, but it does pick up pace as it heads towards an unpredictable but satisfying ending. It would have benefited from a faster pace and a little more detail and anticipation in places, but it is still a well-written thriller and I am glad I read it.
