Brilliant Historical Novel Set At The Time Of The Thirty Years War.

JC Harvey has written an excellent debut novel about a young boy, Jack Fiskardo, an orphan who is badly injured in a fight with another of the 'dock rats' in Amsterdam. The boys both had jobs on a ship owned by a Scotsman, Mungo Sant, who has recently gone into partnership with Yosha Silbergeld, a local merchant. When one boy is fished out of the water Mungo looks for Jack and, finding him injured, takes him to the home of Yosha to be cared for by his housekeeper, Zoot. Jack only has in his possession a penknife and a silver disc of a silver wolf. Is this The Silver Wolf of the title or is Jack The Silver Wolf? The religious war lasting thirty years was an horrendous time in history and it's going to be fascinating to read the rest of this book and discover the part Jack plays during that time.
