Firstly I was impressed by the book cover. But I was put off by the very long list of characters. However, I persevered and was rewarded with a very enjoyable read. The thirty years war is not a subject I am familiar with and so was looking forward to learn more. I loved the beginning of the book following the orphan Jack with many talents who befriends Cornelius.
I look forward to finding how the story develops as I believe it shows true promise with another two books to follow!
