The Silver Wolf is the debut fictional novel by J. C. Harvey. It is Book 1 of the Fiskardo’s War trilogy and is itself in 3 parts.

This opening book tells of orphaned horse whisperer Jack/Jacques/Jag Fiskardo as he seeks to track down his father Jean’s killer. The backdrop of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) is an unfamiliar historical period to me. I enjoyed the travels across Europe from France to Amsterdam and then Germany and I liked the mix of dialect of the time, various languages and modern wording. There is also clever blending of fact and fiction.

The cast of characters at the beginning of the book is helpful as there are many and the plot is complex. It is a marathon rather than a sprint!

This book, and in fact the trilogy, would suit any enthusiast of 17th century European history. It is dark but with strong themes of love, family, trust and courage.
