This is a big ole book but don't let the size put you off! It's part one of what promises to be an excellent historical saga. Set in the 30 Years War of the 17th Century it primarily focusses on the story of Jack/Jacques/Jag. He's a warrior in waiting - the son of a renowned fighter.
When his parents are both killed by an unknown assassin he makes it his mission to track down the perpetrator and exact his revenge.
The story does jump around a bit and there were times when the changing timeline left me confused about which characters belonged in which time period.
However Jack makes a really absorbing main character and his need for revenge is palpable. The descriptions of the war are rich and detailed, the history being as interesting as the story weaved amongst it.
I loved the author's brief summary of the history of this war and the geographical map of the time, which preceded the tale. It really helped in the understanding of the context of the book that followed
