I have been a lover of historical fiction for years and was looking forward to reading this as it is set in a period that I am not as familiar with. At first I admit the thought of 560 pages was a bit off putting especially knowing that this is the first book of a trilogy.

Set during the 17th century Thirty Years War it follows the story of Jack Fiskardo as he tries to avenge the death of his father by travelling from France to Germany looking for the truth. When we meet Jack as a teen boy, alone in the world but with an ability to look after himself, he meets a number of people who shape his character, unravel his venerability’s, encourage his need for vengeance and show him skills to enable him to proceed on his quest.

The second part of the book takes us back to when he was a young boy where he sees his father leave to fight in the war and loses his mother.

The final part sees him in Germany now in the army of General Tilly and his first experience of battle and as the war progresses Jack earns the reputation of a hard, unbeatable and invincible man which is why he wears The Silver Wolf pendant.

The book is fast paced and cleverly written introducing the readers to some exciting characters, looking forward to part 2.
