I have to say I was really looking forward to sitting down and reading this vast novel, as I’m a fan of historical based stories. However, I found this quite difficult to follow at times. Maybe, because I’m not as acquainted with some of the flouncy, convoluted language employed by the author. I thought, at times, she went a bit over the top with some of the descriptions and hence why it’s such a long book! This made it difficult for me to feel really engrossed.
However, having said all of this, I did plough on as I was enthralled by Jack’s journey and the twists and turns his life took. I wanted to understand his back story to his life, and wanted to journey with him through all of lives ups and downs and to see how and where his story ends.
There are some interesting characters and plots along this winding journey. This adds to the enjoyment of the book.
