First of all, if you’re intimidated by large books, this may be one that you give a miss. It’s a hearty 515 page book full of history, depth, character and plot. However, the span over many years means that there is quite a lot to explore and remember.

Within this chaos of the war is the protagonist, Jack Fiskardo, who leaves to go upon a quest in order to resolve something. He goes from France, to Amsterdam and then finally to Germany where he ends up on the battlefields. However, whilst travelling he also has to grow up and mature in order to solve the mystery of his father’s death. But, there is a problem, could they ultimately find him first and render his mission unsuccessful and leaving him to the same fate as his father?

This is an epic book - there’s really no doubt about it. It’s perfect for fans of historical fiction and those who are into problem solving too. I did like bits of it even though it isn’t my usual genre.
