I was so looking forward to reading this book and was delighted when it arrived. I usually enjoy historical novels.
Unfortunately I soon found the pleasure disappearing as I struggled to keep on ploughing through it.
It’s quite well written in the modern style where the plot bounces from one part of the plot line to another which I found difficult to keep track of. The historical information was perhaps included with too much detail and discussion... the author has a passion for this historical period. The plot follows the adventures of an orphan boy adrift in the world living off his wits. The characterisation was good but I didn’t engage with any of them to the extent I needed to know what happened to them.
I am sorry to say that I gave up half way through which is very unusual for me. Perhaps it got better as other reviews indicate but I decided I had given it enough extra time!
