I found this a difficult book to read as to me the story did not flow and I found myself looking back at the list of characters at the front of the book to establish how they fit into the story. In fact I gave up at page 302 as I was completely lost as to the story. I normally love historical thrillers but this I did not. Though I did learn something about the 30 year war in Europe during 1630 -1660.
This was the first book of a trilogy with the main character Jack Fiskardo an orphan and it follows his life and struggles from boy to manhood during the 30 years war. Historical stories are normally my go to as I love pictures and smells the authors can create in my mind but I could not find this with the writing in this book. The design of the book cover was impressive and would stand out in a book shop and had I not won this probably on the strength of the cover i would have bought it.
