The Silver Wolf is historical writing at its very best. Against the backdrop of the Thirty Years War you are swept along with our hero, Jack Fiskardo, as he grows from urchin to soldier and undertakes a quest to avenge his father's death. The writing is wonderful, it's full of detail but has a light touch, an almost conversational style that I found easy to read. The main protagonist is engaging and all the characters are well developed, there are a lot of them though so you need to keep you wits about you, especially as some of them are known by multiple names! It also shifts in time as we go back to learn about Jack's early life and the fate of his parents. I loved this book, I was totally engrossed from the first page to the last. The Silver Wolf is the first in a series and I really look forward to reading the further adventures of Jack Fiskardo and his crew.
