Firstly I was attracted to the stylishly designed book sleeve with its intriguing red seal (together with the novel 's title of course).
This is the fictional debut for this author, following primarily the adventures of Jack, the main protagonist, set within Europe during the Thirty Years’ War, and appears to be the first in a trilogy. Having not previously studied this historical period I was looking forward to learning some facts among the fiction. A short timeline was included at the beginning which helped.
I will be honest and say I found the start quite tricky to engage with as the many characters seemed rather overwhelming and it was an effort to remember who everyone was. The author has clearly carried out extensive and thorough research which I found impressive.
In my view, this is a book which requires concentration and commitment from the reader, but once engrossed, it is doubtless a very entertaining and worthwhile read, like being taken on a historical journey.
Jack is a character one does warm to despite his many foibles although he has survived much hardship and aggression during his life so the reader is on his side.
I'm looking forward to reading the remainder of the series in due course.
