This book is the first in a planned tribology. It tells the story of Jack, who is trying to find out what happened to his father. The book is in three parts. The first in Jack's teenage years, the second in his younger years and the third as an adult. It is set during the thirty years war which I had heard of but knew nothing about so I found that particularly interesting.
There are a lot of characters which at first can get confusing but eventually you get to know them all quite well and find it really adds to the depth of the story as a whole.
Jack himself is an interesting character with lots of layers. Hes brave, impusive, and loyal. It's enjoyable to take the time to get to know him and all the people who are involved in his life.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction. I'm looking forward to being able to complete the trilogy.
