WhenI first saw the book I was a bit daunted about the length of it but I needn't have worried because I soon got hooked on the story and didn't want it to end (which It won't because there are more books to follow). The setting of the story in the 17th century during the thirty years war is a new reading era for me, although I am a fan of historical fiction. It was such an interesting read although the trauma of war was a bit harrowing at times. I am sure the author had to carry out a vast amount of research because the whole story felt very real and I could feel myself immersed in that period of time and loved the writing style of the author. I had a real affinity with Jack, such a strong and determined character, and enjoyed his adventures and also the interesting people he met along his journey. I am certainly looking forward to the next stage in Jack's fascinating story
