This story reeled me in from the start and I did not want it to end. Luckily, it has not ended, because The Silver Wolf is the first book in a series about the frequently surprising and endlessly resourceful Jack Fiskardo. It is written in an engaging and involving manner, with the story coming together through a veritable cornucopia of characters and a wide variety of points of view. Even Jack's horse, Milano, gets to voice his opinion! This narrative style makes for an entertaining read. I found it somewhat reminiscent of The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson.
The setting is the thirty years war in 17th century Europe, and the action moves around all over the continent. There is a lot to keep track of, but it is all worth it to keep travelling along on Jack Fiskardo's fascinating life story. Another interesting aspect of the narrative is the inclusion of a strong female character, who is not just the love interest.
I hope J. C. Harvey gets the next book in the series out soon, because I am suffering from Fiskardo withdrawal symptoms.
