First, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book even though the size did put me off a little.
There were A LOT of characters and places and general background information thrown at the reader, which was quite confusing but once you read through this the story became much more solid.
You were introduced to the main protagonist as a young boy and followed his family life. The family live a simple but tough lifestyle and although he learns lots of rewarding skills, he is unaware of why they live like this - his father is worried for their safety.
After he loses his parents, the story follows him on his journey for revenge. There is plenty of violence, fights, death and destruction. But also true relationship with people he learns to trust and who help him on his way.
I love a historical novel and I feel this was a good example of how it can be done well. I would look out for this author again.
