This is clearly impeccably researched, and it is rich with details and provides a fascinating insight into the time period.......Unfortunately though as a novel this doesn't quite work for me.
I found the plot quite plodding and stodgy in places and found myself struggling with the motivation to read on......but I found if I could plow through those sections the plot is enjoyable and a satisfying read.
So for me this is a book of highs and lows - as the first in a series this is always gong to be about character and world building and it does so very well, and as a debut novel it is ambitious, covering a sprawling time period, and while not perfect it is certainly a strong debut and I will look out for the second book when it is released to continue the story.
