This book's cover is enough for a historical fiction fan like me to want to be interested in finding out what is inside. Then the synopsis reels you in with talks of a trilogy so that always makes me feel that the characters will be really have time to grow.
I also like that you have here a list of characters and a map so you can look back very easily at where they fit in to who that was. The map is also useful for explaining where the countries mentioned are today as some of the countries have changed borders and names.
I have never read or even heard of the European 30 years war so that both surprised and made for added interest. But really its Jack Fiskardo himself who makes this book he has been dealt a bad deal in life his father is murdered when he is very young but that just makes him want to succeed and he travels Europe to try to find out who his father's killers were. On the way he meets some very interesting characters it is full of good historical detail and really paints a picture of those times and is obviously very well researched.
It is an interesting read and don't be put off by its size it keeps your attention and I look forward to reading of further adventures in the next two books.
