Review based on first-look extract only.

I recently had a discussion with other bookworms regarding the lost art of Chapters with titles, Prologue, character descriptions, maps etc and this book has all of these classic elements. Starting with a quick authors note regarding the careful balance between historical-fiction, it sets the tone to enjoy the novel as a story and not get too tied up in facts and accuracy.

The tone is quite light, with a blend of olde-worlde language mixed with modern speech which makes for an easier read, it’s not like trawling through Chaucer.

Based on the extract I would read this book. Even though historical fiction is not my usual go-to genre I imagine this would be an entertaining read. The storyline has a good pace, without unnecessary padding out or elaborate descriptions - I dislike books that are 500 pages which could have been 400 were it not for the waffle. There’s no waffle in this book, so thumbs up from me
