I was so hoping to love this novel, as I’m a huge historical fiction fan, but for whatever reason I actually didn’t end up finishing this.
I loved the cover, and the blurb sounded brilliant but there was something a little too bleak about it and I also found it quite a complex read which I just didn’t have the headspace for at the time. The writing was definitely beautiful, and it was the kind of storytelling which should’ve easily kept me gripped but it wasn’t one of those reads which I was desperate to get back to when I wasn’t reading it, and in the end it started to feel like hard work. I did mostly listen to this on audiobook which was really well narrated, but perhaps if I picked up the actual book I’d find a better pace and enjoy it more.
Having said that, Jack was definitely a really compelling and intriguing character - a bit of a loveable rogue type which I always enjoy reading about! Think it was a case of right book wrong time for this one!
