'The Silver Wolf' by J.C. Harvey is a richly constructed historical novel, set in the 16th century, that truly pulls you in to the life of it's central protagonist, Jack Fiskardo. I should say, this is the first book of the planned series by Harvey called the Fiskardo's War. And I, for one, can't wait to continue the journey at the close of 'The Silver Wolf'.
This first book, although not chronological, focusses on what shapes Jack from early childhood. There's a sense of the epic in the detail of this story and the themes are of courage, love and loyalty.
Jack evolves from a waif to a quick witted, effectual and resourceful lead and I'm hooked into his 'life' and character development.
Harvey is generous with the descriptive detail and doesn't hold back in the more disturbing battle scenes. It's fun, humorous and rather addictive. The backdrop of the 30 years war comes alive in this well crafted opening to a new historical series that I'd completely recommend.
