from the cover of the book and the usual blurb on the back I was unsure what to expect from this novel. I was in for a pleasant surprise though. It was more than I actually expected it to be.
set in The netherlands and France and germany the author transported you to destinations of which the descriptions could have almost been outside your window. you follow the story of an orphan boy called Jacques. When his patents are killed he has to learn to fend for himself and gets a job in holland before going to germany. when he finds one of his father's old friends he sets going through a time warp of the thirty years war travelling across europe in the quest to find out who killed his parents. His story becomes fascinating but it is hard to follow all the characters in the book as sometimes >I feel there are too many to keep a track of. Sometimes breathtaking, sometimes heartbreaking the author transports you into a haunting tale
