I found The Spiral to be a bit of a confusing read and to be quite honest I’m not one hundred per cent sure that I definitely “got” it. I found the first few chapters to be quite engrossing and was starting to get into the story and then it switched and added in the fantasy element which disrupted the flow and made it seem a little childish (although the surrounding story is really not particularly childlike). I think that it didn’t work for me overall because of this crossover between “reality” and storybook / video game style fantasy. I’m afraid I lost interest about half way through and although I did finish, the second half was very much a skim read. This will be a book for those who are more into fantasy and happy to suspend their disbelief and mix reality a lot more than I was. Thank you for the copy to read, sorry this just isn’t one that worked for me.
