This plot could be the lives of any number of girls during any war. I know firsthand about love and loss in war, my great aunt losing her fiance in World War II and never marrying because he was the one. She dedicated herself to her work as a nurse, becoming a theatre matron and doing wonderful things in the UK and across Europe. She was my hero, but it is also sad to know that she lost her one true love. This story really appeals to me, and the historical timeframe of the Great War and the lives of ordinary people affected by it, in both good and bad ways, makes me want to find out more.
